Mission

~ The mission of the Master of Science degree program in Industrial and Organizational Psychology is to offer graduate education which provides advanced study in the behavioral science of psychology, generally, and in industrial and organizational psychology, specifically. The scientist-practitioner program prepares high-quality professionals with a foundation in theories, methods, and research findings of basic and applied psychology and with the skills to effectively apply this knowledge in private and public sector organizations. Graduates are trained to work in various activities for improving an organization’s effectiveness, to conduct research and be sophisticated consumers of research, and to pursue doctoral level training.

Objectives

  • To develop a basic understanding of general psychology, including acquired or learned bases of behavior, social/cultural/systemic bases of behavior, and individual or unique bases of behavior.
  • To develop knowledge of research design, methodologies, and statistical techniques.
  • To develop knowledge of theory, history, research, and applications of industrial psychology topics such as employee selection, human resource measurement and validation, criterion theory and development, job analysis, performance appraisal, and human resources training and development.
  • To develop knowledge of theory, history, research, and applications of organizational psychology topics such as worker motivation, employee attitudes, work teams/groups, leadership, organizational change and development, organizational climate and culture, and work environments.
  • To develop knowledge of other work-related topics such as human factors, human resources management, employee assistance programs, or business principles.
  • To develop applied research and statistical skills used to investigate questions and acquire knowledge in organizations.
  • To develop skills to apply knowledge and techniques of industrial and organizational psychology in a variety of settings, including business, industry, government, and not-for-profit organizations.
  • To develop skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and interpersonal competence, which are necessary for functioning as a professional in diverse situations.
  • To develop an understanding of the philosophical, ethical, and legal issues related to the practice of applied psychology.
  • To develop a sensitivity to and awareness of social and cultural diversity in the workplace.
  • To develop teamwork, collaboration, and consensus-building skills.
